Noted for its history as an attractive and stable community of small business owners, concerned residents and proud homeowners, Mt. Pleasant is a community comprised of 23,000 people located in southeast Cleveland, Ohio.
Settled in 1826, the first residents of Mt. Pleasant were farmers from the Isle of Man, a self-governing island located in the Irish Sea, between Great Britain and Ireland. This rural community quickly grew into a Bohemian community, as Russian Jews migrated to the area in the late 1800s, followed by a wave of Italian immigrants.
However, it was the onset of World War I that brought the largest influx of settlers, as Blacks from the South were encouraged to relocate to Cleveland to offset the shortage of factory workers who had left for the war.
Mt. Pleasant had always been known as an open community, with Blacks living alongside Whites since its early settlement. Blacks first became area landowners in 1893, when a contractor gave them land in exchange for pay.
